Goal Setting is it a Priority in Your Life?
“Goal setting is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” — Tony Robbins
How do you feel about goal setting? As Benjamin Franklin says, “if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” If I am honest, I would say I am more of a bucket list kind of person. There are things that I would like to do in my life but they’re just sitting there on a list under the category of hopes and dreams.
When I was teaching in school districts, we would sit in planning meetings and set SMART goals. In order for a goal to be attainable, it needs to be: specific, measureable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. My bucket list does not meet the criteria as stated by a SMART goal.
The first week in January my business partner and I had a 2021 planning meeting. About a month before our scheduled meeting, he sent me goal setting forms to fill out. There was a vision form, 2021 objectives form, and quarterly sprint form. What I learned is that it was difficult for me to be specific. I had general ideas of what I wanted to accomplish but I wasn’t sure how to drill down to the specifics.
This morning I came across a paper in my journal. I wish I had looked at it while I was doing my business goal setting. I think it would have been helpful in guiding my planning.
- Plan for each area of life: professional, personal (family, health/wellness, habits/behavior, travel)
- Be specific: For example, lose weight vs. lose 10 pounds by June 1. The goal needs to be actionable.
- Celebrate successes: daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. Don’t wait until the end. Celebrating along the way will keep you motivated and on track.
- Dream Big: set BIG short-term and BIG long-term goals. The BIGGER the goal the BIGGER the achievement or accomplishment.
One important thing to remember, failure is inevitable. Don’t beat yourself up when you don’t achieve the goal you set. That is a time for reflection and identifying why it wasn’t achieved. Then make any necessary adjustments and keep striving to achieve your desired goal.
Goals make things happen! Good luck!
